We have defended our Responsible Care certification

On 14 September 2023, the Managing Director Ing. Pavel Čechmánek received the Responsible Care certificate at the Evening with Czech Chemistry event held by the Association of the Chemical Industry of the Czech Republic.

The Responsible Care (RC) program is voluntary, internationally recognised and has been developed as a chemical industry initiative focussed on supporting sustainable development by means of increased safety at operated facilities and during the transportation of products and improved protection for the health of both people and the environment.

The basic principles were established in Canada in 1985. The Association of the Chemical Industry of the Czech Republic (the ACI CR) joined in 1994. 84 companies from the ACI CR and its collective members advocate the fulfilment of RC principles in the Czech Republic, while there are 65 national associations with more than 600 companies worldwide.

This year, we once again managed to defend our international Responsible Care certification in chemistry. Our company has worked in line with the program’s principles since 1994 and in 2011 it adopted a declaration, on the basis of which it undertook to manage its activities as a member of the Association of the Chemical Industry of the Czech Republic to ensure a high level of health protection, safety and environmental protection. Our company received consent from the ACI CR to use the logo in the same year. After this year’s defence, our Responsible Care certificate will remain valid until October 2027.

Despite the fact that the acquisition and use of the RC logo is an exclusively voluntary undertaking on the part of the company, it is far from easy to comply with the program’s requirements, which are in line with the demanding nature of some legislative requirements. The inspection includes the quantitative stipulation of significant indicators such as accident rates, energy consumption or emissions and even investment costs in the areas of health, safety and the environment.

There is also an annual report on the state of the environment and a highly detailed questionnaire evaluating the company’s policies, standards and implemented procedures in all the evaluated areas. These documents serve as the basis for the company’s assessment which is undertaken by the members of the ACI CR evaluation committee. Moreover, we also discuss all the information and materials internally with representatives of the trade unions every year. As such, the entire process provides a detailed view of the company’s principles, among which we include environmental protection and a responsible approach.

In 2022, the European Chemical Industry Council (CEFIC) reviewed the management framework and also modified the RC self-evaluation tool. We see this new questionnaire as an interesting benefit, the output of which not only includes information about the current state of the company, but mainly proposals and tips for improving the processes. In this way, the CEFIC is helping us to constantly improve. This year, we at Fatra completed our fifth defence of our Responsible Care certificate in chemistry and we are rightfully proud of it.
